Racers, start your engines!!!  The traditional start of a race did not work for the event planned for last Saturday featuring young innovators and their vehicles from Hamilton County Schools.  The power behind the cars was not fossil fuel engines but electricity.  Student teams had built electric powered cars to race in the inaugural Chattanooga Green Prix hosted by green|spaces at Chattanooga State Community College with races at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The schools received a base Greenpower USA kit car with a chassis, wheels, motor, batteries, and instructions to assemble the kits. The students were encouraged to create a shell for the car using as many recycled materials as possible.  The teams also learned how to charge the batteries for their car using renewable energy from solar power or other sources. The student builders had the opportunity to identify tweaks to make the car go faster including adjustments to the aerodynamics, alignment, and driving techniques.  Speed, however, may not have been the most important factor as the endurance built into the electric cars may win the day.
Congratulations to our very own Dalewood VW eLab team, lead by Mr. Seanard, who brought home the victory, finishing first place.
